Few have been doing it longer than DJ Hollywood, but the pioneering Las Vegas nightclub entertainer still remembers the first big Vegas New Year’s Eve party he spun.

“It was at the Beach nightclub, and it was 1995 going into 1996,” he says. “Back then there was no such thing as a celebrity host. You would have different acts or groups come in, but that was later. You know who was there? Peter Coors. He came to congratulate us, because at that time we sold more Coors Light than any other freestanding building in the world. He gave us this award, and it was pretty cool. There were probably 6,000 people there that night. It was ridiculous.”

Hollywood will ring in 2019 at Hyde Bellagio for the second straight year, but you can catch him there this weekend, too.

“Last year at Hyde was absolutely insane, a knock-down, drag-out party,” he says. “It felt a little like old Vegas nightlife to me, because it goes away from the gigantic DJ or gigantic act. The DJ was me. That was it. It’s just a party.”

Hollywood’s old-school style is a natural fit at Hyde, one of the more intimate clubs on the Strip. Maybe it’s because it balances luxury and those back-of-fountain views with an always-raging party scene. The DJ, who will celebrate the 15th anniversary of his Beatclan artist management and entertainment company next year, says Hyde’s service makes the difference.

“The security is not so uptight there. Other spots, they are worried about you standing on the furniture, or it’s, ‘Don’t bring your drink to the dancefloor,’ that kind of stuff. I’m not mad at the rules at other clubs, but they are a little more relaxed at Hyde. The security guards and bartenders and cocktail servers are always smiling. That’s where that feeling comes from.”

He’ll be amplifying that feeling on December 31, and warming up for it on Saturday.

DJ HOLLYWOOD November 17, 10:30 p.m., $20-$30. Hyde Bellagio, 702-693-8700.
